Traian Grozăvescu

Born in Lugoj on November 21, 1895, celebrated tenor Traian Grozăvescu lived in a house at no. 8 on the street that today bears his name. The building is part of a compact urban tissue and a continuous front of ground floor or semi-basement and ground floor houses. The surrounding block features both historical buildings with early 20th-century decoration and structures dating from the 1960s-1970s. The street itself is quiet, typical of residential areas, in contrast with the parallel commercial and much busier Bucegi Street.

The main façade, rather long, is currently of a simple appearance, punctuated by the windows’ full– empty play, by trapezoidal vertical volumes on the street and by engaged columns that divide it into four areas. The first of these areas is dedicated to the access into the courtyard, at one point probably fitted with a wooden gate, and the others are indicative of the building’s interior housing function.

Vertically, the façade has a pedestal area, corresponding to the semi-basement, and a profiled belt in the upper side, which divides the ground floor from the attic, the latter punctuated by the ventilation openings. The roof is covered in profiled tile.

A memorial plaque reminds passers-by that great tenor Traian Grozăvescu there.
