Richard Oschanitzky House

44 Gheorghe Doja St., Timișoara

Timișoara-born composer Richard Oschanitzky lived at 44 Gheorghe Doja Street in a building part of a compact historical and urban context with continuous fronts on the street side. The typically 19th-century surrounding block bordered by streets Gheorghe Doja, Virgil Onițiu, Coriolan Băran and Romulus underwent no significant changes to alter the historic feel. The house itself however is sadly in a precarious state, although it is on the list of historic monuments (no. 95, code number TM-II-a-B-06109.)

The corner-situated, L-shaped building, probably dating from the 19th century too, features a semi-basement and a high ground floor. The corner position is emphasised by its own projecting corner, a richly ornamented pediment standing higher than the rest of the structure and which develops on the two sides of the house. The street façades are divided into three horizontal registers, in their turn separated by a profiled belt between the semi-basement and the ground floor and a trapezoidal cornice between the roof truss support and the ground floor.

The semi-basement, designed to support the building, uses a different colour palette and is set with bosses. Ground floor façades are decorated with horizontal and continuous geometrical ornaments, pyramids in relief that draw attention to the building’s corner. Window frames are adorned with geometrical patterns and the massive wooden door on Gheorghe Doja Street is the only architectural element that both breaks the rhythm and unites the two horizontal registers.
